I tried to see the Shanghai Art Museum today during my two-week vacation. Because my works were exhibited in the Shanghai Art Museum when I was a high school student decades ago. But I can no longer find it at the original location - a prosperous and busy place in Shanghai (Nanjing West Road and Huangpo North Road, Shanghai). Now the place is full of commercial buildings and crowded with people.
I remember that I was in high school at that time, about 17 years old, young and in the prime of life. Art in that era was art. There was absolutely no commercial flavor. It is completely different from now. It is said that when Van Gogh and Brasson were alive, most of their works could not be sold and no one cared about them. Later they became the best painters and photographers in the world. Commercialized art is never real art.
Shanghai Art Museum may have moved to new place. I hope that the new Shanghai Art Museum can still be crowded and bring people into the real art realm like in the past. Shanghai will always be the capital of Chinese art.
